Beer Soda Biscuits

2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/4 can beer
1 tablespoon vegetable shortening (Add it to frying pan)
Mix the dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl. Blend in the 2 tablespoon vegetable shortening until the mixture is coarse and grainy. Using a fork, stir in the buttermilk and beer. Do not over mix. Put out on a floured board or marble pastry board and knead just a few times. Pat out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut with a biscuit cutter or use the open end of a kitchen cup. (Flour the cutter) Do not handle the dough too much or baked biscuits will not be crisp and fluffy flaky.

Using a heavy iron frying pan; add 1 tablespoon of vegetable shortening to the frying pan and put the pan into a 400-F oven for a few minutes until oil is melted. Remove the pan from the oven and place the biscuits in the pan. Turn each once in the oil and bake the biscuits at 400-F degrees for 10 minutes or until light golden brown.
